Gluten free
Is milk gluten free?
Plain milk is gluten free.
Why
Milk is an animal product with no gluten grain involved.
Because this is intrinsically free of gluten grains, the only realistic route to a problem is something added to it or a shared surface it touched. In a home kitchen where you control both, it needs no special handling.
What to check on the label
Flavoured and malted milk drinks are not — malted milk contains barley.
Across the EU and in the UK, the fourteen major allergens — including cereals containing gluten — must be emphasised in the ingredient list, usually in bold. A separate rule governs the words "gluten free", which may only appear when the product tests at or below 20 mg of gluten per kilogram. "Very low gluten" is a distinct legal category permitting up to 100 mg/kg and is not the same claim.
The exception people miss
Untreated coeliac disease can cause secondary lactose intolerance, which usually resolves as the intestine heals.
How much risk is this really
Practical contamination risk here is low. If the product is unprocessed and the label is clean, you do not need to interrogate it further.
For context on what these thresholds mean physiologically: a systematic review of the tolerable amount of gluten for people with coeliac disease concluded that daily intake below roughly 10 mg is unlikely to cause histological damage in most people [4]. The 20 ppm labelling limit is built around that figure on the assumption of normal portion sizes. Meta-analysis of gluten contamination in labelled gluten-free products, naturally gluten-free foods and food-service meals found contamination is not rare [1][2] — which is precisely why the supply chain matters as much as the ingredient.
