Usually gluten free
Is cheese gluten free?
Most cheese is gluten free. Blue cheese, processed cheese and anything with additions need checking.
Why
Cheese is milk, culture, rennet and salt. None contains gluten.
The base ingredient is safe, so your attention belongs on processing and additives rather than on the food itself. That is a much narrower thing to check, and it is usually resolved by reading one line of the ingredient list.
What to check on the label
Grated cheese sometimes uses a starch anti-caking agent, and cheese spreads may use wheat-based stabilisers.
Across the EU and in the UK, the fourteen major allergens — including cereals containing gluten — must be emphasised in the ingredient list, usually in bold. A separate rule governs the words "gluten free", which may only appear when the product tests at or below 20 mg of gluten per kilogram. "Very low gluten" is a distinct legal category permitting up to 100 mg/kg and is not the same claim.
The exception people miss
Blue cheese moulds were historically cultured on rye bread. Testing consistently finds the finished cheese below 20 ppm, and it is generally considered safe.
How much risk is this really
Practical contamination risk here is low. If the product is unprocessed and the label is clean, you do not need to interrogate it further.
For context on what these thresholds mean physiologically: a systematic review of the tolerable amount of gluten for people with coeliac disease concluded that daily intake below roughly 10 mg is unlikely to cause histological damage in most people [4]. The 20 ppm labelling limit is built around that figure on the assumption of normal portion sizes. Meta-analysis of gluten contamination in labelled gluten-free products, naturally gluten-free foods and food-service meals found contamination is not rare [1][2] — which is precisely why the supply chain matters as much as the ingredient.
